Privacy Policy
What we collect, why we collect it, who sees it, and how to get it back or get rid of it.
Effective [EFFECTIVE DATE]. Like the Official Rules, this policy is a template: anything in square brackets must be completed and the whole document reviewed by a lawyer before launch.
This policy covers MegaMoneySweeps, operated by MegaMoneySweeps (“we”, “us”), at https://megamoneysweeps.com. It applies to the website and to the email we send you.
The short version: we collect what we need to check you are eligible, run the daily drawings and pay prizes. The site is free to play and is paid for by advertising, so advertising partners are involved when you browse. We never ask you to pay anything, and we do not sell your member record to data brokers.
1. Information we collect
- Email address, your login, how we tell you that you have won, and where we send marketing email if you opt in. We may record an email address you type on the home page before you finish signing up.
- Name, to verify identity before a prize is paid, and to publish winners (see section 5).
- Postal address (city, state, postal code), to confirm you live in an eligible state and to deliver prizes and any tax paperwork.
- Date of birth, solely to confirm you are at least 18, which the Official Rules require. We store the date so we do not have to ask again.
- A one-way fingerprint of where you signed up from, when your account is created we take your IP address and browser identification string, scramble each through a one-way function with a secret key, and store only the result. We do not store the address itself. The stored value cannot be turned back into an address, a location or an internet provider; all it can do is tell us that two accounts were created from the same place, which is how we spot one person opening many accounts to take more than their share of the prizes.
- Account and play activity, the entries you submit, the numbers you pick, the draws you entered, your wins and their payment status, your referral code, and the time you last signed in.
- Survey answers, if you choose to give them, the optional “About you” survey asks about gender, household income, education, employment, marital status, children at home, housing and interests. Taking it is entirely voluntary and skipping it costs you nothing but the extra plays it pays; if you do take it, every question is required, because a partial answer is no use to an advertiser. We do not ask about race or ethnicity. None of it affects your eligibility to enter, your odds, or whether you are paid if you win.
- Technical data, ordinary web server and analytics data such as browser type, pages viewed and referring site. We also count requests per address for short periods to stop automated floods; those counts are not tied to your account and are deleted within a day.
We do not ask for payment card details, because there is nothing to buy. If you win, we may need additional details to pay you, for example a completed IRS Form W-9 or payment account details, and we collect those only at that point.
2. Why we use it
- To describe our audience to advertisers in groups, for example “readers interested in cooking”, which is what makes the advertising that pays for the prizes worth more. Survey answers are used for this and nothing else, and we do not sell them as a list or hand an advertiser your individual answers alongside anything that identifies you.
- To create and secure your account, and to keep you signed in.
- To confirm you are eligible to enter: 18 or older, resident in an eligible state, one account per person.
- To accept entries, run the daily drawings, evaluate entries against the winning numbers, and notify and pay winners.
- To prevent fraud and abuse, duplicate accounts, automated entry, and attempts to tamper with the draw.
- To send you service email you cannot opt out of while you hold an account: prize notifications, password resets, security notices and changes to these terms.
- To send marketing email about games and promotions, if you have not opted out (see section 4).
- To meet legal obligations, including tax reporting where a prize threshold is reached, and to keep records of who won what.
3. Advertising, and how this site makes money
MegaMoneySweeps is free to enter and is funded by advertising. We show ads on the site and may include sponsored messages in our email. That revenue is what pays for the prizes, so it is worth being plain about what it means for your data.
- Advertising partners and analytics providers may set their own cookies or similar identifiers in your browser and collect information about the pages you view here, in order to measure ads and to show you ads elsewhere.
- We do not sell your account record, your name, email address, postal address or date of birth, to data brokers, and we do not hand your email list to advertisers.
- Sharing identifiers with advertising partners for cross-context behavioural advertising may still count as a “sale” or “sharing” under California law. If you would rather we did not, use the opt-out in section 8; we honour it whether or not you live in California.
- We also share information with the service providers that run the site for us, hosting, email delivery, analytics, fraud prevention and prize payment, who may use it only to provide that service to us. And we will disclose information where the law requires it, or to protect our rights or the safety of others.
4. Email and your right to unsubscribe
Every marketing email we send carries a working unsubscribe link and our postal address, as the CAN-SPAM Act requires. You can unsubscribe at any time, from the link in any marketing message or from your account settings, and we will stop sending marketing email promptly and in any event within 10 business days. We will not sell or transfer your address to another sender after you unsubscribe, and we will not charge you or make you give a reason.
Unsubscribing from marketing does not close your account or cancel your entries. You will still receive service email, prize notifications, security and account messages, because those are how we tell you that you have won. To stop all email, ask us to delete your account (section 8).
5. Winners are published
When you win, we publish your first name, last initial and state , for example “Jordan R., TX”, next to the prize amount, on the winners page and in marketing for the sweepstakes. This is a condition of accepting a prize, and it is set out in the Official Rules. We never publish your full name, street address, email address, date of birth or any other contact detail.
6. Cookies
- Session cookie, when you sign in we set a cookie named mms_session holding a random session token. It is strictly necessary: without it you cannot stay signed in or submit an entry. Only a hash of the token is stored on our side, so a copy of our database does not hand anyone a live session.
- Preference cookies, small settings that remember your choices on the site.
- Advertising and analytics cookies , set by us or by the partners described in section 3, to measure traffic and ad performance.
You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings, and most browsers offer a “do not track” or global privacy control signal that we treat as an opt-out of advertising sharing. Blocking the session cookie will stop you signing in.
7. How long we keep it, and how we protect it
- We keep your account information for as long as your account is open, and then for [RETENTION PERIOD] after it closes.
- Entry and draw records are kept so that past drawings stay verifiable, and prize and tax records are kept for as long as tax and sweepstakes law requires, typically several years, even if you close your account.
- Published winner listings (first name, last initial, state) remain on the site as a record of the sweepstakes.
- Passwords are stored only as a salted scrypt hash, never in a form we can read. Traffic is encrypted in transit. No system is perfectly secure, so please use a password you do not use anywhere else.
8. Your choices and your rights
Whoever you are and wherever you live, you can ask us to:
- Access a copy of the information we hold about you, and how we have used and disclosed it.
- Correct anything that is wrong - most of it you can fix yourself in your account settings.
- Delete your account and the personal information attached to it. We will delete what we can and tell you what we must keep and why, for example records of a prize already paid. Deleting your account ends your entries and forfeits any unclaimed prize.
- Opt out of the sale or sharing of your personal information for cross-context behavioural advertising.
- Unsubscribe from marketing email, as described in section 4.
California residents have these rights under the CCPA/CPRA, including the right not to be treated differently for exercising them. We will not deny you entry, change your odds, or reduce a prize because you made a privacy request. Other states give similar rights, and we apply the same process to everyone.
To make a request, email [email protected] from the address on your account, or write to us at the postal address in section 11. We may need to confirm it is really you before acting, usually by emailing the address on the account. An authorised agent may make a request on your behalf with your written permission.
9. Children
MegaMoneySweeps is for adults. You must be at least 18 to create an account or enter, we ask for a date of birth to check, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 18, including children under 13, whose data is protected by the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act. The site is not directed at children and we do not advertise it to them.
If we learn that we have collected information from someone under 18, we close the account and delete the information. If you believe a child has given us information, tell us at [email protected] and we will deal with it.
10. Changes to this policy
If we change this policy we will post the new version on this page and update the effective date above. If a change materially affects how we use information you have already given us, we will tell you by email before it takes effect.
