Prize scams are among the oldest frauds running and they have never stopped working, for a reason that is slightly uncomfortable: real prize promotions are also confusing, also full of paperwork, and also arrive out of nowhere claiming you have won something.

So “be suspicious of anything that seems too good to be true” is useless advice here. Winning a prize is, definitionally, too good to be true — and sometimes it happens.

What works better is knowing the specific things a legitimate promotion structurally cannot do, because of the same laws that make it legal. Twelve of them, one at a time.
