The Science of Luck

Lucky people really do exist, and it really is not luck. What the research actually found, and where it stops working.

Ask a room of people whether they are lucky and most will have an immediate answer. It will be confident, it will feel like a fact about the universe, and it will be almost entirely a fact about them.

That is not a dismissal. It is roughly what the research found, and the research is more interesting than either the believers or the debunkers usually let it be.

The experiment with the newspaper

The most-cited work here is Richard Wiseman's, carried out at the University of Hertfordshire over about a decade from the mid-1990s. He recruited hundreds of people who described themselves as consistently lucky or consistently unlucky, and then set about finding out what was different.

His best-known test: he gave subjects a newspaper and asked them to count the photographs in it. On the second page, in enormous type, was a message saying "Stop counting — there are 43 photographs in this newspaper." Halfway through was another one offering money for mentioning it.

The self-described unlucky subjects tended to miss both. The lucky ones tended to spot them. Not because the universe pointed them out, but because the unlucky group was tenser, more focused on the assigned task, and less likely to notice anything they were not looking for.

Four things that keep showing up

Strip the branding off and the differences reduce to a handful of ordinary behaviours, each of which has its own literature independent of anything called luck.

  • Noticing more. Relaxed, open attention picks up opportunities that narrow, anxious attention filters out — which is well-studied under other names and has nothing to do with chance.
  • More attempts. People who describe themselves as lucky talk to more strangers, apply for more things and try more often. More draws, more wins. This is not a metaphor; it is arithmetic.
  • Recovering faster. The same bad event gets narrated as "could have been worse" by one group and "typical" by the other. The event is identical. What follows it is not.
  • Acting on hunches. Intuition is pattern recognition running below the level you can articulate. Sometimes it is signal, sometimes it is noise, and people who act on it get more of both.

Notice what every one of these is: a behaviour that changes how many chances you encounter and what you do with them. None of them changes the probability of anything.

Why so many people are sure they have seen luck work

Three ordinary features of how minds work, which together are enough to manufacture a lifetime of evidence.

The first is the law of truly large numbers. Events with tiny probabilities become certainties given enough trials. Somebody wins a lottery essentially every week; somebody, somewhere, wins two. A one-in-a-million coincidence happens to about eight thousand people a day on this planet, and each of them experiences it as a message.

The second is that we remember hits and forget misses. The dream that came true is a story. The four hundred that did not are not stored at all. Nobody is being dishonest; the filing system simply does not keep both.

The third is the gambler's fallacy and its mirror image. A coin that has come up heads six times is no more likely to come up tails — and a slot machine that has not paid out is no more "due". Independent events have no memory. This one is almost impossible to un-feel, even when you know it.

The remarkable thing is not that one-in-a-million events happen. It is that they happen on schedule.
The uncomfortable summary of every coincidence story

The hot hand, and why it is a good story

For decades the standard example of luck-as-illusion was the basketball "hot hand": a 1985 paper found no evidence that a player who had made several shots was more likely to make the next one, and this became the textbook case of humans seeing streaks in randomness.

Then in 2015 two researchers found a subtle statistical bias in how the original analysis was done, and when they corrected for it, a small hot-hand effect appeared after all. Not a large one, and not the one fans believe in — but not zero.

It is worth knowing about because of what it does and does not change. In a game of skill, where a player's state affects the outcome, streaks can be real. In a random draw, where nothing about the previous result touches the next one, they cannot be. The correction applies to basketball. It does not apply to a lottery ball.

Where this stops being useful

Everything above is about opportunities that involve other people, effort or judgement. Applied to a random draw, it becomes exactly the thinking that costs people money.

A lottery machine cannot tell whether you are relaxed. A scratch card does not know you are due. Your numbers are not warm. There is no state of mind that improves a hypergeometric distribution, and anyone selling you a system for one is selling you a system.

The one genuinely useful thing probability offers a player is uncomfortable and small: in a pari-mutuel game where a jackpot is shared between winners, picking unpopular numbers does not improve your chance of winning, but it improves what you get if you do — because fewer people will have picked the same line. Everything else marketed as a lottery strategy is decoration.

So is anyone lucky?

Yes, in the only sense the word usefully has. Some people encounter more opportunities, notice more of them, act on more of them and recover from the failures faster. Over a life that compounds into something that looks a great deal like fortune, and from the inside it feels like fortune, and the person is not wrong to call it that.

What none of it does is bend a draw. That part is genuinely, boringly random — which, if you think about it for a second, is the only reason it would be worth entering.

The honest version of the advice, then: be the kind of person more things happen to. Buy the ticket if you enjoy the ticket. Do not confuse the two.
