Maarten de Jonge, who missed two planes
The Dutch cyclist who had been booked on both MH370 and MH17.
In March 2014 de Jonge, a professional cyclist based in Malaysia, changed his booking off Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 to save money. The aircraft disappeared over the Indian Ocean with 239 people aboard and has never been found.
Four months later he was booked on MH17 from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur, and changed to a later flight. MH17 was shot down over eastern Ukraine. All 298 people aboard were killed.
De Jonge has been consistently uncomfortable with the attention, pointing out that hundreds of other people also changed those bookings and that the coincidence says nothing about him. He is right, and it does not make it less remarkable that it happened to one person twice.
The statistical point he keeps making is worth restating. Both aircraft carried hundreds of passengers and both had a normal churn of changed bookings, so the number of people who nearly boarded one of them runs to thousands. That somebody was in the overlap of both is close to expected. That the somebody was one person, twice, is the part that stays remarkable.
