An entire Swedish village
A Dutch supermarket gave away a place with a population.
In 2012 the Dutch grocery chain Jumbo ran a promotion whose top prize was the village of Skinnskatteberg, or at least the branding of it. The prize was the right to be its honorary mayor, not the deeds, which is a distinction the headlines mostly skipped.
The genre is older than that though. Small European and American towns have repeatedly been offered up in competitions and raffles, usually because a single owner wanted out of an unsellable asset and a contest reached more people than an estate agent.
